Why do I need backups of my WordPress Website?
Your WordPress database contains every post, every comment and every link you have on your website or blog. It also contains every order, enquiry and any other interactions you have with your customers. If your database gets erased or corrupted, you stand to lose all this. There are many reasons why this could happen and not all are things you can control. With a proper backup of your WordPress database and files, you can quickly restore things back to normal.
Site backups are essential because problems inevitably occur and you need to be in a position to take action when disaster strikes. Spending a few minutes to make an easy, convenient backup of your database will allow you to spend even more time being creative and productive with your website.
There are many scenarios in which you will be extremely grateful for taking the time and making the effort to backup your website. Even for small problems, you will be relieved if you’ve got a backup; for extreme problems, you will be forever thankful!
At the most basic level, you could be working on a post or article and delete it by mistake. If you haven’t backed up, you may have to rewrite it all. Small errors can occur on your site, where part of your website may become altered or you may lose pictures or articles through your own mistakes. More serious, your website might be compromised by hackers, viruses or malware. These attacks can leave your site corrupted and virtually useless. A good backup system allows you to restore your site easily to its former glory.
Not backing up can cost you financially, too. If you have an E-Commerce store and the database becomes corrupted, you could easily lose all your customers details.
You may have orders to send out for products that have already been paid for and unless you have this information recently backed up you won’t know what to send to who. This will be seen as providing an extremely bad service, may lose you customers and ultimately will cost you money.
What backup solution do I choose?
There are two parts to backing up your WordPress site: Database and Files. You need to back up the entire site, and you need to back up your WordPress database.
WordPress has become the leading blogging platform with good reason — it’s powerful, flexible, reliable and user-friendly. With the help of its comprehensive plugin system, WordPress is also amazingly extendable.
However, even the best application has its weaknesses, and one of the weakest features of a default WordPress installation is backup. The included backup system limits you to exporting posts, pages, comments, custom fields, categories and tags. What you don’t get are backups of directories, files and databases — without which, should disaster strike, you won’t be able to get your WordPress site back up and running quickly.
There are countless backup solutions for WordPress and, at first glance, it is hard to know which option to choose and where to start.
That is where SafeNsound Backups come in.
We have taken all the hardship out of taking backups.
Once you sign up for our safeNsound service, ( safeNsound backups only or one of our 3 safeNsound packages) we take over your backups.
SafeNsound takes the load of your mind by running scheduled backups and making sure that up-to-date backup is always ready. And since our backups are incremental and run off-site, it will successfully back up even the most problematic websites.
What does this mean?
- Our backups are scheduled to run automatically on a 12 hourly basis.
- Incremental backups mean that every backup is compared to the previous one and only the changes are recorded. This means that your backups take up less space and can be written much faster. If you need to restore or download a backup all the necessary increments are put together to give you a full backup.
- Our backups are run off site. This means that the backups are not stored in your site. A lot of popular backup solutions will store your backups on your own website. For small changes and mistakes that is not a problem, but when your site becomes compromised through hacking, viruses or malware, your backups will be also compromised and will be rendered useless. That is why we store all our backups of site in secure amazon s3 storage.
- Your backups are stored for 90 days. If you remove the website from your service, backups will be removed after 7 days. If you re-add your website within these 7 days, your backups will still be available. If you need to store backups for longer than 90 days, we can offer you storage in your own 3rd party storage for an additional €5 + VAT per month.
